"A Xia's Diary IV" is now available for download

The Xia Diaries continue! Designer Gweilo has just released the 4th custom campaign in the series. This installment will take you south, to the warm seas and steaming jungles of Annam (ancient Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia). You will face many challenges and adventures there while in the service of the Tran Dynasty, which came to power in ancient Vietnam in the 13th century.

"A Xia's Diary IV" features five new custom maps with unique designs. Rebellions and warfare engulfed Annam during the 13th century, and to reflect this most of these new maps will require you to rebuild destroyed cities. One example is the Hao map shown here (adapted from the actual topography of Hue, Vietnam). Needless to say, all your skills as a Xia will be tested in this campaign!

For some clues (and spoilers) about this campaign, check out the screenshots in the playtest album.

You can download the campaign here. Prepare yourself, it is designed to be a solid challenge for advanced players!

A Xia's Diary III - City-building with RTS Elements

Designer Gweilo has made significant progress on "A Xia's Diary III". His design blog has some revealing commentary on the focus of this custom campaign, and its target audience. This excerpt seems to sum it up:

While I fully understand that Emperor is at its core (and at its best) a city-building game, not a military real-time strategy game, there are certain design concepts that can be stressed to move it in the RTS direction. I also understand that doing this does not appeal to everyone; in fact I believe the majority of players are casual gamers who prefer Emperor to be a relaxing, slower paced, strategy game without distractions like combat. However, there are also many hard-core, advanced players (and you know who you are, still playing after all these years!). I'm building this campaign with that later group in mind.

So ask yourself this question: How well do you know the hero in the portrait on the left? Do you know his abilities? If you do, then this custom campaign may be a treat for you. Yet even if you don't know him well, there is still time for you to get to know him, and hone your skills for "A Xia's Diary III". The project is still on track for a release later in 2017.

The Return of the Xia Diaries

It has been over five years since designer Gweilo has released a custom campaign of epic scale. That will change in this Year of the Rooster! He has begun working on the third installment of his popular Xia's Diary series.

The campaign's storyline will highlight the turbulent period of rebellion and civil war which triggered the collapse of the Han dynasty during the late 2nd and early 3rd centuries (CE), as chronicled in the Records of the Three Kingdoms, and romanticized in The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. As you walk the path of a Xia, your diary will include your personal interactions with the famous historical figures of the time, including the warlords Liu Bei, Sun Quan, and Cao Cao. You will witness and participate in many of the actual historical events of this era!

Gweilo will build eight new custom maps for this project, including the new Yin map, shown here. For other clues (and spoilers) about this campaign, check out the screenshots in the playtest album. You can also keep up with the latest news on the project at Gweilo's design blog. As with the other custom campaigns in this series, "A Xia's Diary III" will be designed for advanced players. At this time, Gweilo anticipates a release date sometime late in 2017.
