This zip file contains 'Yong-AXD-eastside-p2.sav', my solution for mission 8 of "A Xia's Diary".
The save was played at 'very hard' and has perfect Feng Shui. This mission has a 'survive 4 years' mission goal, and the save is in January of 202 BCE, just before victory. This mission is a continuation of mission 7, and the key points to victory are evolving elite housing, winning allies, and successfully defeating the invasions. I had a personal goal to fight all the invasions, instead of bribing. Important points illustrated in this save game are:
1. Trading posts are once again allowed to be placed on the map. Immediately open trade with those cities selling food, raw silk (or silk), and lacquer (or lacquerware). This will allow you to evolve your elite housing to Impressive Compounds.
2. Make sure you begin producing large quantites of stone in the first year. Some rather large requests for it will come, sometimes with little time in between.
3. The iron deposits on the mountain will support 3 ironworks. You should place them as soon as possible to begin producing more iron and weapons. You will need about 5-6 weaponsmiths to meet the production goal.
4. Continue to increase your military. I recommend at least four cavalry units and the rest infantry. The extra cavalry will serve you well in battles of manuever, to strike against the enemy catapult units (see below).
5. Whether or not to build set defenses (walls, towers, gatehouses) is a matter of personal preference. This map has a full compliment of 8 invasion points, so the enemy can appear anywhere. I did not use set defenses in the save game here, although I did place some strategic wall sections, to block off pathing to some locations.
6. In the month before the invasions arrive, pre-position your cavalry units to the northeast and south edges of the map (2 units per area). This should put at least two of them in an advantageous position to manuever behind the enemy advance, when the invasion spawns on the map. The most likely spot the invasions will spawn (invasion point 1) is in the gully where the large salt marshes are located in the northeast. Your pre-positioning will allow your cavalry to make an attack against the enemy catapults (the most dangerous enemy units), which lumber along slowly at the rear of their line-of-march. Pulling off this tactic without getting your cavalry wiped out takes timing. Wait for the enemy to pass on towards your city, then move to swoop in on the catapults. Set your cavalry's aggressiveness to 'turtle' and their formation to 'open palm', to reduce casualties from the catapult fire.
7. If possible, summon Sun Tzu before the invasions arrive, since his presence will give a bonus to your infantry's morale.
8. Pay attention to the event messages. Some of the cities are scripted to have trade stoppages and 'city becomes rival' events. (This simulates Xiang Yu's strong influence on them.) This can make it challenging to meet the 'allies' mission goal. However, it is quite possible to end the mission with more than 5 allies (this example has 7 allies). The main strategy to follow is simply to meet any goods requests and lavish them with gifts.
9. Monitor your allies favor levels. If an ally becomes 'Philanthropic', immediately make a goods request to them. Otherwise, they will probably send you a gift of a less-useful commodity.
10. You may wish to send a spy to sabotage Pingyao's military. This is not essential to winning, but it will help prevent Pingyao from launching an unscripted invasion against you.
11. When the Xiongnu activate later in the mission, they will be 'displeased'. You may consider sending a spy to sabotage their military, too. |

You have built your bandit camp into a city while attracted followers.
Will it be enough to impress the other city rulers?
How charismatic you were and how productive your city can be will dicate your success.
