Linksys routers

Linksys LogoOne way to configure your Linksys router to allow playing Emperor on your machine would be to demilitarize (DMZ) it. That will also allow all the other programs on your machine, such as the Instant Messengers, and other multiplayer games to access the Internet. Be aware, however, that in this case your machine will no longer be protected by the built-in router firewall. If this is not a big deal, follow these simple steps:

  • First of all, you will need to learn the IP address of your machine. To do that, click Start and Run (Windows XP keyboard shortcut: Windows Key+r). In the Open field type in "cmd". Press Enter or click OK.
  • In the command prompt, type "ipconfig /all", and press Enter.

  • Write down the IP address of the network adapter, through which your computer is connected to the router.
  • Launch Internet Explorer or Netscape, and enter the Router's default IP address, "http://192.168.1.1", in the Address field. Then press Enter.
  • A password request window will pop up. If you have not changed the default settings, leave the User Name field blank and type "admin" into the password field; click OK.
  • Click the "Advanced" tab.
  • Click the "DMZ Host" tab, and make sure that the IP address of your machine is contained in the "DMZ Host IP Address" field.
  • Click Apply; click Continue.
  • Your computer is now ready for Emperor MP. Note, however, that if DHCP is enabled by the router, the IP address of your machine might change. If that happens, it will not be DMZ'ed any more. So, if after some reboot of your machine, Emperor ceases to work, check if your machine is still DMZ'ed, by repeating the steps above.

Alternatively, one could forward the necessary ports only, and not open all ports to the machine. That approach is much safer than the DMZ host, as it does not expose the machine to the internet completely. To do that, first find out the IP address of your machine, as in the steps above. Then:

  • Launch Internet Explorer or Netscape, and enter the Router's default IP address, "http://192.168.1.1", in the Address field. Then press Enter.
  • A password request window will pop up. If you have not changed the default settings, leave the User Name field blank and type "admin" into the password field; click OK.
  • Click the "Advanced" tab.
  • Click the "Forwarding" tab.
  • In the first row of textboxes, type in the following information:
Customized Apps Ext. Port TCP UDP IP address Enable
Emperor 25332 to 25333 Checked Checked The IP of you machine Checked
  • Click Apply; click Continue.
  • Your computer is now ready for Emperor MP. Note, however, that if DHCP is enabled by the router, the IP address of your machine might change. If that happens, the settings will no longer apply. So, if after some reboot of your machine, Emperor ceases to work, check that the settings are still correct by repeating the steps above.

Note: This one port forwarding filter should be enough to allow for gameplay. However, additional ones might be needed. In that case, add the following filters on the same screen:

Customized Apps Ext. Port TCP UDP IP address Enable
Emperor 15101 to 15101 Checked Unchecked The IP of your machine Checked
Emperor 15200 to 15200 Checked Unchecked The IP of your machine Checked
Emperor 15300 to 15300 Checked Unchecked The IP of your machine Checked
Emperor 15800 to 15800 Checked Unchecked The IP of your machine Checked
Emperor 20941 to 20941 Checked Unchecked The IP of your machine Checked
