Bodhidharma - The Kung Fu Monk
Bodhidharma is known for bringing Zen Buddhism to China. There is some dispute over whether there really was such a historical individual, but the following is what is generally detailed about his life. He was born in Southern India around the year 440 CE. His spiritual
instructor, Prajnatara, told him to go to China so he traveled there by ship, arriving in Southern China around 475 CE. It is said he spent nine years in meditation, facing the rock wall of a cave about a mile from the Shaolin Temple. During his life he had very few disciples and died in 528 CE.
One of the stories about him says that he cut off his eyelids to stay awake in meditation and so is usually portrayed with bulging eyes. Legend says that tea-plants sprang up where his eyelids fell to the earth.
He is also credited with founding martial arts, Kung Fu. Bodhidharma devised this first as an exercise program for monks to strengthen the body for meditation and to defend themselves against bandits or invading warlords. He taught that martial arts should be used for self-defense, and never to hurt or injure needlessly.
