Shen Nong - The Divine Farmer

Shen Nong is a legendary emperor who it is claimed taught the Chinese people how to cultivate farmland. He is credited with teaching them how to sow grains, to observe the land to learn where was fertile farm land, inventing the plough and cart, taming the ox and yoking the horse. Sometimes he is drawn with the head of an ox.

His other renowned contribution is that he was the first practitioner of traditional Chinese herbal medicine. The legend is that he tasted hundreds of herbs to test and analyse their effects. He determined which were medicines and what they should be used for, and which were poisons, and taught this to the people.
