Sun Wu Kong – The Monkey King

Sun Wu Kong, also known as Sun Hou Zi, is one of the most popular characters in Chinese mythology. Legend says he was born from a stone egg which was impregnated by the wind. He became King of the Monkeys, before setting out to study Buddhism and magic, and managing to obtain the peach of immortality. Many folk tales are told about him.

The most famous story about him, which is told in the 16th century Chinese classical novel “Pilgrimage to the West”, recounts how he accompanied the Buddhist monk San Tsang in his sacred mission from China to India to bring back holy scriptures. He first had to be released from under a mountain where Buddha had buried him as punishment for his misbehaviour. He is portrayed as a fun loving, mischevious, undisciplined but very loyal, brave and clever chararacter who saves his master many times on their long journey.
