The Warring States

By the time the Western Zhou capital fell to a coalition of barbarians and discontented warlords in 771 BCE, the disintegration of the kingdom was already well underway. Though a new capital was quickly established at Loyi, the central power of the Zhou kings continued to ebb, so that soon they were but a mere figurehead of authority for the more than 170 small principalities. By 480 BCE, however, only eight or nine powerful states remained to vie for ultimate control. Warfare had become an all-pervasive way of life. Princes raised huge peasant armies, equipping them with the easy-to-use but deadly crossbow and strong, new iron weapons. Powerful siege engines guaranteed that even thick walls would no longer protect a besieged city. The common people meanwhile hoped that one state would eventually emerge victorious, unite the land and end the vicious bloodshed.
