City States of Shang - Temple for Tang
It seems the recent passing of Tang the Perfect has caused a bit of a construction boom. Throughout the kingdom, cities scramble to erect shrines and temples to honor his memory. Not one to be outdone, the town of Bo has had architects devise plans for a Grand Temple. They want you, most noble administrator, to oversee its construction. You must first designate a suitable site for the monument. Loggers will then be needed to fell trees for lumber and laborers will be available to construct a sturdy foundation of rammed earth.
Local farms can now grow cabbages as well as millet. Instead of building new farms, however, consider converting existing millet fields to cabbage. Surplus hemp and ceramics can be sold for profit, but do not forget to give generous offerings to our ancestor heroes, as their blessings are vital. Lastly, it is time the people of this town started paying their allegiance to our King. Adding an Administrative City will allow tax offices to be built.

Here we are back in Bo. Hope you left things nice and tidy.
First thing you want to do is a bit of suburban renewal. I had two overlapping Millet farms. I deleted some of the tiles between them and replanted with Cabbage. Cabbage is planted in August and harvested in December. If you wait till after the Millet is harvested in November, you wont get a full Cabbage crop the next month. And, check the Mill settings. You will want it to "Get" the Cabbage when it is ready.
Check the Religion tab, you have a new Ancestral God in this mission, Haung Di. If he isn't too happy, you might want to tend to that.
I added some houses around the block and re-checked my Food Shop settings. The Spacious Dwellings need Plain (2) foods. I had given them Ceramics the last time (duh) but they will need Ceramics, Appetizing (3) foods and more appeal (gardens) to evolve to Elegant Dwellings.
OK. We are selling Ceramics, Hemp and Wood to Hsaing. Banpo also buys Ceramics. Now that the city of Bo has learned to make Bronzeware, buy a little bronze from Banpo (4 units at a time is fine) and start a small Bronzeware industry close to the Ceramics area. You can sell your Bronzeware to Qufu.
Get the monument started early. I picked a spot disconnected from the city, close to some trees since you will need a lot of wood.

Click on the Monument Full report to see what is needed. Lots of wood, lots of dirt and 1 unit of clay. Set up a logger and accepting warehouse for the wood near the monument. You will need an Inspector for them, but not for the guilds and Labor camps you place later. Once the warehouse gets 4 units of wood, it will automatically take it to the site and distribute it in tidy little stacks. Work will not start until you place a Carpenter Guild. |
The order is like this: wood delivered, Carpenters work, then Laborers, then more wood is delivered, Carpenters again, then more Laborers. Then the Carpenters work a long time, and finally the Ceramist takes that one unit of clay and finishes it all up. Give him his own clay pit, it is easier than getting some from the city proper.
Back in the city, you can expand the Ceramics and Bronzeware industries. Add another Farm with more Cabbage than Millet if you want to sell Cabbage.
The houses are going to have to have 3 foods all the time to stay at Elegant Dwelling. You have your game meat, Cabbage and Millet, but you can import a bit of Wheat or other food type for insurance. Set the Mill to Get 8 of each the 4 foods and you will always have enough variety to keep the houses stable.
Add the Administrative building and Tax Collector. I had just one logger supplying the Tax office and selling the extra wood to Hsiang. Another reason to have the Monument disconnected from the City. The wood delivery guys will head for the Monument warehouse that is accepting wood instead of the Tax Office and those guys over there will wander around the city delivering wood to the Trading Post and Tax Office. It is terribly inefficient.
Now, about this Hero requirement. You will have to make regular homage offerings until one of them is at least Joyful, or better yet, Exalted. You will get a message that "your city is now worthy of an Ancestral Hero" and he shows up in front of the Ancestral Shrine. My favorite is Huang Di. He gives your houses Ceramics when he passes by and can bless Kilns. Shen Nong can bless Hemp farms and Nu Wa can bless Inspector Towers (they are improved and send out 2 inspectors). Once a Hero comes to the city, you have to keep paying Homage or they will leave.
The requirement of 9 months is cumulative. If your hero leaves before the 9 months is up, just gift him again until he comes back or a try a different one, and the counting starts from there (it doesn't start over).
Check the monument now and then and add what it needs. Once the two layers are built and the carpenters are working on the top building, you can turn off the Labor Camps or delete them. The Great Temple is pretty nice, but you ain't seen nothing yet.
- Finished Jan 1556
- 1716 population all in Elegant Dwellings
- 14 months of Heroes
