Song Jin - The Luxuries of Kaifeng

Although the Khitan still demand periodic tributes, we have pushed them back to the Yellow River. Fortunately, their occupation of Kaifeng was not destructive, and the city has already recovered.
Having reviewed the results of the most recent examinations, the Emperor has chosen you to oversee the future development of Kaifeng. He expects it to soon become a cultural center unsurpassed in the world. Return to the classical teachings of Confucius, and ensure that all learned people study his ways. Respect too the animals of the land. The emperor has set aside his own palace grounds as a park for creatures from all over China. Fill the park with at least six exotic species.
In science and technology, our achievements grow more impressive each day. Our Emperor's collection of scholarly books and encyclopedias includes 80,000 volumes! Wonderful devices such as the compass, abacus, and spinning wheel can be found all over our city. Su Song has drawn up amazing plans for an astronomical clock tower. Please help him achieve his goal.
Finally, a new threat, the Xia-Xia Empire, is rising in the west. Our continued policy of appeasement of our enemies with the riches of our land should keep them at bay, as it has the Khitan.
Good luck, wise governor. You are presiding over the greatest city in the world, unsurpassed in its culture. Do not disappoint the Emperor.

City - Kaifeng
Starts Feb 1085 CE
Starting cash carried forward from Mission 1

Requirements:
  • Clock Tower must be built
  • 6 Menagerie Animals required
  • Population of 5000
  • 100 people in Heavenly Compound or better

For this mission you return to the capital of Kaifeng that you built in the first mission. Not everything is the same though, changes in the world map mean some cities that were trading in the past no longer exist, new cities have appeared and some cities that remain have changed trading amounts. Therefore at the start of the game I paused and rearranged my trading to suit, replacing some trading posts and asking to open trade with other cities.

I had much more silk than I now needed so gave gifts of silk to Xia Xia which saw its mood improve to the point where in 1086 I was able to open trade with them and sell them silk. I also sent animals off to other cities to try and get new animals in return. I repeated this again a couple of times later and finished with all 9 animals.

I built a 2nd housing block, supplying it with all foods, goods and services almost as soon as the first occupants arrived so as to evolve housing quickly and allow higher taxes. The Clock Tower was placed behind the housing and a getting storage yard used to get supplies for it. It was the second last goal finished in Feb 1087. The other goal of Heavenly Compounds was met easily by deleting a common house in the mixed block and building a Theatre to give the Elite housing access to Actors.

Since I had an excess of most goods I decided to use some of them to call Confucius to the city to increase tax income though money was never a problem at all in this city. He arrived in September 1085 and stayed for the rest of the mission. Population of 5000 was the last goal met in April 1087.
