Song Jin - The Mongols Are Coming
The defeat of the Khitans, and the rise of our Jin dynasty, have changed the political landscape. The Khitans' Liao Empire, centered on the steppe to the north, is no more. A new power is emerging into that vacuum to claim the Mongolian steppe. Genghis Khan has unified the tribes of Mongolia and is currently campaigning against the Xia-Xia Empire to the west. His rise to power was sudden and swift, and our spies report that the Mongol cavalry are using formidable new tactics that are breaking each of their foes. It will not be long before the riches of our land attract the Great Khan's eye.
The direct path from Mongolia to our capital of Zhongdu traverses a long, narrow mountain pass, 100 li to the northwest. Ruined Qin Dynasty fortifications are all that guard this pass, Juyongguan, at this time. Directly in the middle of the long, narrow pass, at the ancient site of the Qin dynasty labor camps, we must build a new wall of stone. You are in charge of that project, my most trusted architect.
The walls of the valley are steep, leading down to a small stream at the bottom. You will find game meat to hunt, wood to cut, and stone to quarry. Let's hope you don't have to use the iron for weapons. We want to be done this project before the Mongol hordes sweep down the valley.
Have confidence, loyal servant, for your project does have the full support of the Emperor. We will send regular dispatches of stone from Zhongdu out to your work site to supplement the rocks you quarry locally. This project must be completed swiftly. The fate of China rests in your hands!

City - Juyongguan

The only goal for this mission is building a section of the Stone Great Wall, but it's a very large job and the Monguls try to make the job more difficult.
I built one mixed block of housing, with 4 Impressive Compounds which would have allowed me to build 10 forts if necessary, though I only ever built 5 forts. All my trading posts, military and most industry was built in the South West, near the stone quarry and iron ore deposits.
There was an early invasion by the Monguls which was quite nasty in Aug 1201, just 18 months into the mission. With 6 months warning I managed to build 3 forts and call Guan Di before they arrived. I used Guan Di's blessings of filling each fort with weapons/wood as I wouldn't have had enough weapons otherwise. I also built a large section of city wall and towers on the enemy side of the Great Wall. This was quite a difficult battle to win with Mongul Cavalry, Infantry and a couple of Catapults attacking. No bribe option was given, presumably because I didn't have enough cash to pay, and the only surrender option was lose game, becoming a vassal wasn't an option. Since I'm not a good fighter if I played the mission again I would consider attempting to gift the Monguls cash, silk or tea in an attempt to stave them off.

After that invasion I built another 2 forts in preparation for more invasions but didn't have another one until 5 years later in August 1206 by which time I had 65000 cash in my treasury and was able to bribe them 5150. I had called Guan Di early in the mission to help deal with the first invasion but dismissed him after that and called Xi Wang Mu to help speed up construction of the Stone Great Wall. I also regularly had her blessing jade carvers as I was only able to import 12 jade but could export up to 48. I kept her in the city continuously until just before the 2nd invasion when I dismissed her and called Guan Di in case I needed him to defend my city. |
The major source of income was taxing my people at Outrageous with all common housing evolved to Luxurious Apartments and the Elite housing to Impressive Compound (I didn't allow space for a theatre for them to become Heavenly Compounds). Other income came from selling carved jade, weapons, steel and stone.
The last stone for the Stone Great Wall was finally laid in July 1207, after 7.5 years and the mission was won.
