Song Jin - China Reunited

Fifty-three winters have fallen on China since the end of the Tang dynasty. Fifty-three black winters, each marking the conclusion of yet another year of fighting and chaos. In this time, northern China has seen five dynasties come and go, each being overthrown by yet another military usurper. The south is likewise fragmented, divided into ten regional kingdoms. It seems the Mandate of Heaven has been lost for all time. Can the glory of China ever be restored?
And so, Zhao Kuangyin, the fate of China has been placed in your hands. Last night, your fellow officers stormed into your tent, hauled you from bed, and placed the Imperial yellow robe of Chinese royalty on your back. Now they march on the capital with you. Once in Kaifeng, you will assume power from the newly installed boy-emperor. He is weak and dominated by his mother -- not a fit ruler in these troubled times. Establish a strong base at Kaifeng, and keep it well guarded at all times. We have too many enemies to risk losing everything. We have two outposts on the borders of enemy territory. Each will provide critical aid in the difficult months ahead. At Pingyao, to the north, General Pan Mei is establishing a mining outpost where stone and steel can be harvested from the earth to fuel your armies. Along the Yangzi, your aid comes from the newly appointed Governer Fan Ruoshui, at Chizhou. Our Southern Tang enemies hide behind the river, foolishly thinking it protects them from the north. But Fan Ruoshui has tested that river many times. He is preparing a fleet of more than a thousand dragon boats. If we string them together with bamboo our armies can cross the mighty river on foot over a floating walkway.
And it is thus, Zhao Kuangyin, that you will strive to reunite China. Conquer our enemies one by one, never letting them unite against us. The Jingan at Jiangling, the Hunan at Tanzhou, the Shu at Chengdu, the Southern Han at Guangzhou and the Southern Tang at Yuzhang -- once four of these enemies are defeated the fifth will fall in line. Only then will China finally see the awakening of a glorious spring.

Requirements:
  • Rule 4 cities
  • 36 Months of Heroes

This first mission in the Song-Jin dynasty takes place in the city of Kaifeng. You will return to this city in Mission 4 so you may want to allow for that when planning out your city.

The major goal is to rule 4 cities, so obviously military must play a large part in this mission. The other goal is a hero for 36 months. After looking at the heroes available in this mission it seemed to me that the obvious choice was Sun Tzu, both to fight for me and also for his half cost forts and fortifications as I had decided early to wall in the entire city.

There is one smaller walled in section in the city from the start. I decided to turn this area into a military compound and to build my housing block (with space for a second block in the 4th mission) to the east of this. This block was a combination block with 5 Elite and 34 Common houses.

Silk and ceramics to Pingyao are the major trade items, so I started producing both in the first year. I also built 2 hemp farms the first year, both for the hemp for my housing and to make paper for tax and the Confucian Academy (necessary to call Sun Tzu). Taxation started in October 960, with Outrageous taxes in this mission more money was made from taxes than from exports.

The first food was bean curds imported from Pingyao though I did build one farm in the first year and more in subsequent years. I also imported steel from Pingyao and started weapons production and requested weapons from both Pingyao and Chizhou. I finished the first year with a loss of about 10,000, and 15,000 cash still left.

During 961 the requested weapons from Pingyao and Chizhou arrived and I requested yet another lot (this wouldn't be possible without gifts to them at the harder difficulty levels.) I expanded the silk and ceramics industries and created the first Cavalry and Catapult forts. Sun Tzu arrived in December. By the end of the year I was importing tea and the Common Housing was all Luxury Apartments, the city made a small loss this year.

In 962 Cheng-du was conquered using 3 forts and Sun Tzu, a gift of wheat turned them from bitter to loyal and I started importing lacquer from them to make lacquerware for the Elite houses and for later trading. I finished the City Wall and spent quite a bit of money on beautification of the housing block, not for desirability but simply because I wanted it pretty. The profit for the year was about 10,000 so from then on money really wasn't an issue with profits increasing to 14,500 in 963 and 23,500 in 964.

During 963 Guangzhou was conquered using 3 forts and Sun Tzu, before those troops returned I sent 4 other forts off to conquer Tanzhou. Early in the 965 I sent 3 forts and Sun Tzu to conquer Jiangling and victory occurred in April 965.
