Song Jin – The Khitan Strike South
Emperor Taizu has departed to join the ancestors. Following his mother’s wishes our great leader has left his dynasty in the capable hands of Taizong, his younger brother. Taizong’s wish is to finish the work of his older brother, bringing the last two holdouts into the fold of the newly formed Song Dynasty. The first goal will be to regain the kingdom of Wu Yue, centered in Lin’an on the southeastern coast of China. Wu Yue assisted Taizu in his previous campaigns against the Southern Tang, leaving them weak and ripe for plucking. We believe they will surrender quickly if confronted with a major military force. After Lin’an has joined the fold, the road becomes more treacherous. Therefore Taizong has selected you, General Pan Mei, to return to your outpost at Pingyao. Lying on the borders of the Northern Han state, it is a perilous locale. The Northern Han will not want us to strengthen our position so close to their capital of Jinyang. And yet, it is exactly what we must do, for a strong military camp there will be a springboard for a move northward against Jinyang, your ultimate target. Tread softly though, noble General, for a new power is emerging on the steppe. Out of the Manchurian Plain rise the nomadic Khitan, yet another barbarian threat to our civilized culture. Our spies report that emissaries have left Jinyang to enlist the aid of the Khitan. If this report is indeed true your mission to bring Lin’an and Jinyang into the Empire becomes even more dangerous than anticipated.

Requirements:
- Rule 2 cities
- Produce 20 blocks of stone in one year
The goals in this mission are to conquer 2 cities and produce 20 stone in a year. Producing 20 stone is fairly simple, 2 stoneworks will produce 24 stone in a year once they are past the initial 4 month phase of digging out the first block of stone.
When laying out the city I decided to put my housing block in the North East of the city. One reason for choosing this spot is so that I could have a warehouse near my market getting ceramics and silk from the Kaifeng Trading Station which I situated near my stone, steel and weapons production so these goods were easily available for export. I chose the western iron ore deposit as it was larger than the eastern one, and made sure I only had the number of steel furnaces it could support to avoid the problem of miners walking across the map to the other iron ore. I chose to build a mixed block of common and elite housing so that I would be able to build enough forts. One section of wall and a couple of towers were placed very early to deal with the salamanders who were eating my immigrants.
The first food was imported fish then rice from Guangzhou and the first industry was to import jade and export jade carvings as this makes a good profit for little labour or cost. I built some hemp farms and later some food farms during 976 and also started on steel and weapons production.
Taxation at Outrageous was started around the end of the first year and by the end of the 2nd year all housing was Luxury Apts and Impressive Compounds. Cash at one point was fairly low with losses of about 10,000 in 976 and 2,000 in 977 but a large profit was made by 978. Mid 976 Stone production was started and the Stone production goal was met in 977.
Though a hero wasn’t strictly necessary in this mission I decided to call Guan Di and he arrived in March 978. He blessed some forts and I didn’t pay him enough attention and he left again about October, with some more homage he arrived again in June 979. Late in 979 Lin’an was conquered by 3 forts and Guan Di.
Earlier I had sent spies to Jinyang and the Liao Empire, in April 980 my spies reported Jinyang would attack within a year. Therefore as soon as the troops returned from Lin’an in June 980 they were sent to conquer Jinyang, victory occurred in August 980.
