New Ways

The winds of the bitter internecine warfare that blow over the lands to the north are not as violent here, along the fertile shores of the Yangzi River. But the winds of change have been felt and with them the wise word of Confucius and the way of the Dao have arrived!
According to royal geomancers, this locations, evidently the site of an ancient temple, would be a most excellent place to establish a new city. If a Confucian Academy is constructed and shrines built for the followers of the Dao, your cities upper class will no doubt take residence in rather impressive compounds. Ensure that your humble citizens give proper respect to Confucius and to our ancestor heroes, for then it is very likely that they will be justly rewarded.

Requirements:
  • 24 Months of Heroes
  • 100 people in Impressive Compound

This is the first mission where Dao Temples and Confucian Academies may be built so now your elite housing can evolve to Impressive Compound. 100 people are required in Impressive Compounds as one of the mission goals. This requires a minimum of 5 elite houses which is what I built as part of a mixed elite/common housing block.

I built this close to the entrance which allowed immigrants to fill the housing quickly. In this position it was also possible to place my Mill close to the fishing wharfs which were my first food type. I started growing hemp and other foods a bit later that year, building my hemp and food farms on the western island.

I built the industry/trade area near the northern exit. Trade to Qufu and Anyang was open from the start of the mission and the first industry I started was again carved jade and later wood to sell to Anyang and for tax. Requests for trade saw only Pingyang agree at first so I set up a small silk industry of 2 silk sheds and 3 weavers to supply 12 silk to sell to them plus allow silk for my elite housing. Pingyang also sells jade so mid way through the 2nd year when I had some excess ceramics I gave a gift of 8 ceramics to Anyi after which they agreed to open trade with me. I was able to sell them carved jade and ceramics.

The briefing suggested the mission would be fairly peaceful and there were no real military threats while I played, though Shu was hostile, so I never built any forts nor did I produce any weapons.

The other goal was 24 months of Heroes. The only choices of hero are Nu Wa, Shen Nong and Confucius. Confucius was the one who would have offered the greatest benefit, by increasing tax income, but you cannot call a Confucian hero until at least one elite house is occupied and getting Confucian coverage. I didn't want to wait until that point to get a hero and I also needed before then to give some homage to an ancestral hero to prevent disasters so I called Nu Wa to the city. I had thought I might later dismiss her and call Confucius but I never did.

In August 485 the 24 months of Heroes goal was met and I finished with 100 people in Impressive Compounds from a total population of 2368 and 15950 cash.
