Iron and Earth
It is truly a vicious and troubled time that we live in, my lord. States devour other states much as an alligator swallows fish. Weakness means subjugation, and neither can be tolerated. To protect the city of Handan and the Kingdom of Zhao, you must see through to completion a critical portion of the long wall. Once finished you can rest more easily in its shadow. In the meantime -- beware! Violent enemies now ride the wind on fast new steeds, armed with iron weapons! Powerful new engines of war lay siege to unwary cities. If you study carefully 'The Art of War' and learn the ways of Sun Tzu, you will surely be better prepared for the trial you are about to face.
Deposits of iron ore must be shaped into strong weapons for our soldiers. Our farmers will even benefit, with more durable iron plows to better split the earth, increasing their output. Make good use of this new technology. You will find it important both of offence as well as defense.

City - Handan

Both the entrance and exit points on this map are in the South East corner so I decided to lay out my city with my trading area situated between the two points. I placed one mixed housing block with 5 elite houses to the north of this.
I built my food and hemp farms across the river and had my silk sheds just south of my housing. My iron industry was of course across the river in the west where the iron ore was and I produced weapons and built my forts there too.
Anyang and Loyi were again open for trading from the start of this mission so selling carved jade and wood to Anyang was again started early. Pingyang also agreed to open trade and I was later able to start selling silk to them, and even later weapons.
From the briefing I was expecting a military threat during the mission and of course one goal was to rule another city so I started iron and weapon production before the end of the first year with the intent to get the goal of 10 iron in a year met early and to start building some forts.
I had just placed my first fort and had one cavalry unit when in February 352 Anyi launched an invasion which would attack in 6 months time. When they did attack I was still in debt so had no bribe option and while I had one fort of cavalry it was not going to be enough. I could have built a lot of towers and possibly held them off, but I really didn't have the money or the workers for that so instead I decided this time to surrender and become a vassal for a while.

This didn't turn out too badly at all. They immediately gave me a gift of cash to get me out of debt and opened trading with me which meant I could sell them 12 carved jade and 12 ceramics per year. I then spent a couple of years developing my housing, making some money from trade and taxes, building up a military and starting work on the Great Earthen Wall. Anyi demanded tribute of 12 bronzeware the first year and 18 wheat the second. I didn't wish to pay them either time so in April 349 they turned hostile, stopped trading and I was officially rebelling. |
In March 350 Loyi demanded 6 iron and Ji demanded 12 iron. I met Loyi's demand, couldn't and didn't meet Ji's. Ji wasn't too happy about this and attacked in August 349. No bribe option was given, presumably the bribe required was over the 16,000 I had at this point. I built towers and had 5 forts of troops and Sun Tzu in my city so I fought and won without too many problems.
In March 347 I decided I was ready to go on the offensive and attacked Anyi with 5 forts of troops and Sun Tzu, leaving a 6th fort at home so as to not leave my city defenceless. I won this battle, making Anyi my vassal and therefore meeting the Rule 1 city goal.
In April 346 Ying demanded 6 iron and I met this demand. In June 345 I got a message that Ji was vulnerable and probably could have conquered them but didn't bother. Now I was just waiting to finish the Great Wall, moving all that dirt was a very long job, but it was finally finished in May 344 giving me victory.
