King Cuo's Temple
At Lingshou, in the small Kingdom of Zhongshan, the local warlord, King Cuo, has financed a Grand Temple Complex, and he has hired you to see the project through to completion. To finish this monument, you'll need to import stone from either Loyi or Qufu, but first their favor must be won. Impressive gifts of shiny new lacquerware, to replace their tarnished and aging bronzeware, will no doubt help to win some favor.
The Daoist philosophy has taken firmer root. If you build a Daoist Temple and pay homage to Xi Wang Mu, the Queen Mother of the West, perhaps she will grace the city. Her mere presence will often help to hurry the hands of monument workers. The esteemed Mencius is also roaming the lands; his benefits on trade and commerce should not be overlooked.

This was another mission where the briefing didn't hint at any military activity and I decided not to build any elite housing. I built my housing near the entrance point to the map, my main industry/trade area near the exit and the Large Palace to the north.
With no food available to import I started growing food as my first priority, followed by hemp. Once my housing had the basics I started logging wood for the Large Palace as I expected this goal would take the longest to meet. Without elite housing I couldn't call either of the Confucian heroes, so I decided to call Xi Wang Mu to take advantage of her benefit of speeding up monument construction. Gifts of hemp and then some ceramics and wood had her appear in the city in Jun 316 and she never left again.

Next I started my industry. No jade carvers are available in this mission so selling jade for profit wasn't an option. Anyang and Qufu were again open from the start and I was able to sell Anyang wood. I asked all the other cities to open trade but only Pingyang would agree to it. That meant I was able to sell 12 silk and 12 lacquer so early in the 2nd year I started growing the raw materials for these By the end of the 2nd year I had excess workers and goods so sent a gift of 8 wood to Yulin and a gift of 8 ceramics to Anyi and was then able to open trade with both of them. I also started an iron and weapons industry. Now that I was able to sell 24 lacquerware I increased production of it and exceeded the lacquerware production goal in the 3rd year. Eventually trade was making over 15,000 per year profit in this city. |
No animals are on the map so Xi Wang Mu couldn't capture any to help meet the Menagerie goal. Also none of the cities on the Empire map liked me enough to allow requests (as distinct from demands) so no animals were available. My zodiac year was a long way off, but in some cases requesting one as a gift for your zodiac year could be the way to start to meet this goal. Therefore I had to work to get a city to a point where I could request an animal. I had lots of spare wood so decided to gift it to Anyang. It took 2 gifts of 16 wood before their mood changed to Admiring and I was able to request an animal. They then sent me a pheasant whose offspring I then gifted to another city in each climate zone and received more animals in return. I continued the cycle of giving and receiving animals for a while and ended up with all 9 animals in my Menagerie.
With all the other goals met once again I was waiting for the monument to be completed to finish the mission. Though it seemed to move fairly quickly once the base was completed. In Feb 312, after 5 years, it was finished and the Zhou dynasty missions came to a close.
