Once, there was a supernatural being called the Monkey King. His real name was Sun Wu Kong, and he served Great Buddha. His many powers were matched by his many moods. Inevitably, a day came when he rebelled. Sun Wu Kong caused great havoc in Heaven before Buddha himself appeared, and punished him.

Now five centuries have passed, and the legend of Sun Wu Kong has faded. It is now, during the time that the new Tang rulers are wrestling control of the Middle Kingdom from the Sui dynasty, that the pilgrimage of a monk will spark the return of the wayward Sun Wu Kong.

You serve with pride as a general of emperor Gaozu. He has ordered you north, to establish a city where you will produce commodities for the Tang war effort. Wuxing Mountain awaits you...rich in resources but also shrouded in rumor and legend. Will you sense the ancient secret also lying in wait? If you believe solving the mountain's mystery is the end of your challenges, you are mistaken. It is only the first of many!

A player will interact with 10 cities (9 historically-accurate). Resources, commodities, and available structures follow the Emperor model for the Steel Age. This campaign features a new custom map of 'enormous' size. Sabotage by spies has been disallowed for this campaign, although spies can still be used for information gathering.

For chronological continuity, this campaign should be played after concluding 'Refurbish Job', mission 4 of the Tang Dynasty 'A Time of Grandeur' campaign.

The download zip file contains an extra file named 'TWSWK_Readme.txt'. This text file contains installation instructions, historical background information, campaign design notes, general play tips, and mission hints (warning: contains spoilers). Additionally, other hints are available by viewing the album of playtest screenshots in the Emperor Heaven gallery.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This campaign is rated 'Very Hard', and is designed to provide a solid challenge for advanced players. For the best play experience, a player should possess an advanced understanding of time-constrained missions, money management, combat and military operations, trading, labor allocation, monument construction, summoning and using the Heroes, meeting production goals, and empire-map diplomacy. This campaign could be considered combat-heavy!

Missions Teasers (note: the first two missions have a time-limit)

Mission 1 - 'The Secret of Wuxing Mountain' - 8 years, from 618 CE to the end of 625 CE

Mission 2 - 'Guan Yin's Divine Plan' - 5 years, from 626 CE to the end of 630 CE

Mission 3 - 'The Taming of Sun Wu Kong' - no time limit, begins in 631 CE

Since there are limited spaces, i have kept on putting my housing in the same places.
However, it is thoroughly enjoyable and i spent hours on this map. All the missions are tough, especially the first 2. The 2nd one is more hectic, so try to get 9 menagerie animals in the first mission itself (note to self: remember to do this).

The start is INTENSE!!!! But you get the hang of it, the initial demands of Chang-an should be met else they send an army to remind you of it.
You should prep for elite housing before you win the mission, else you shall have a bad time in M2. Make sure you have hemp and ceramics enough to put down said elite housing as soon as M2 starts. This is a very challenging mission. I do not use Guan Yin, mostly out of spite, but in this case, I used her to bribe the very first Mongol attack.

In the last phase of Mission 1, Chang-an (our overlord) kept asking for tonnes of food so I brought in my trusty friend Sheng Nong. So I love this bit of creative control the game gives me. I started off by bringing in Huang-Di for the free ceramics and help with the Mongols who invade Year 2. In year 1 itself i had to import 3 stones (for overlord), and 16 weapons enough for 2 cav forts. I kept going to the negative but my allies came in with 800 gold each.

great map! An absolute pleasure to play and behold. There are tremendous choke points and the distances are IMMENSE. This makes the movement of tea in the late game especially critical and houses devolve. To solve this, I put in 2 tea shops in the grand market with 3 warehouses getting tea. There is only 24 tea available per year as Bodhisattva is absent in this whole series. Why!!! He should have been pope !

The action starts right off the bat. Be prepared, read the notes, pray, wear new underwear everyday, and remember to be happy!
Please please please map more such difficult missions! This was an absolute treat! Loved it every second, even the last mission, which is often not the case as you get uber powerful.

Thank you Gwielo, I have started to play this game intensely since 2020. I had played it a little since 2009 but preferred Pharoah.
However, serendipitously I stumbled on the custom campaigns and boy it has been a wild ride since. I have a small YouTube Channel where i play games with insane challenges.
This is right up my alley. Thank you for creating this, please make more!!!!

Hello again Strategic Indian. Thank you for leaving this review!

It has been over 15 years since I released this campaign, and reading your detailed comments peaked my curiosity, because I honestly had forgotten the details of the design. So I opened up the Campaign Creator to refresh my memory about it.

This campaign was one of my more heavy story-driven designs. I tried to combine quite a bit (perhaps too much):

1. The legend of Sun Wu Kong's rebellion and his punishment by Great Buddha.
2. A tie-in to the famous novel "Journey to the West", in which Sun Wu Kong is tamed and joins the monk Xuanzang in his quest.
3. The historic civil war between the Tang and Sui factions for control of the Middle Kingdom.
4. The historic Tang/Koguryo wars which occurred during the 7th century CE.

All those aspects consumed the limited space I had available to write the story in each mission. I believe the reason I omitted Bodhidharma was twofold: first, I didn't want him stealing the spotlight from Sun Wu Kong, and, second, I wanted players to face the struggles of obtaining tea by other means (import, goods request, tribute).

I noticed that this campaign was one I built during the years when I was in love with heavy scripting. There are almost 250 scripted events distributed between the 3 missions. Most of the events may have gone unnoticed during gameplay, as the majority of them affected cities on the empire map. In more recent years, my custom campaigns have not used this type of over-scripting.

In hindsight, the scripted earthquake in the late years of mission 1 is the one event I was most worried players would hate (unless they won the mission prior to triggering it, which is possible - but not easy). This earthquake was only set at intensity level 1 (out of 10), but we know that if a player is playing at "Very Hard" difficulty, then all bets are off on just how intense it will really be when it triggers.

The Wuxing mountain map that I built for this campaign is one that I still like - and I cannot say that for every map I've built since 2003. I am glad that you enjoyed it too.

Thanks for the quick response.
The story was amazing! I loved every second of it.
As I said, it is very rare to make the 3rd/last mission interesting but this was a cliff hanger.

I figured out all the invasion points and built little fortresses to welcome my korean+mongol friends (late game of course). They are 4 wide and 12 long, with 2 gates and 8 towers. They are ringed with a road on which i build gates as i figured soon enough that the enemy was set to rampage mode. With enough cav forts, I could put the armies at the most strategic points asap.

Comment about the gods:
Aaaah I see now why bodhisattva was not included. He has his own charisma....

Earthquake critique:
At very hard difficulty it is really difficult to come back from it, but i won the mission with 9 months to spare. I made elite housing blocks but could you PLEASE :) give more greenery so that my nobles can bring from the goodness of their personal wells. :D

I save the late roman empire but declaring war on everyone, not accept peace and oh yes, not losing a single battle.
There are only 2 humans who are capable of doing that and I am one of them :)
