Raider Lord's Destiny - Singleplayer Campaign

Author File Description
File Details
Age: Iron
# of Episodes: 3
# of Cities: 1
Difficulty: Hard
Custom Maps: Yes
The collapse of the Qin dynasty in 206 BCE triggered a period of civil war in the Middle Kingdom. In this time, daring leaders fought to carve out their own kingdoms from the bones of Qin. This campaign is a fictional adaptation of this period, putting you in the role of one of these leaders.

This campaign was designed with two main goals:

1. Encourage a high motivation for replayability. This was done by the randomized timings of scripted events, so that the campaign would never play exactly the same way twice.
2. Incorporate valid rationale to entice players to use the "looting" mechanics of the game engine (referred to in the storyline as "raiding").

This campaign includes three missions and a player will interact with 6 cities (2 historically accurate). Resources, commodities, and available structures follow the Emperor model for the iron age.

A new custom map of 'enormous' size and humid climate was created for this campaign.

An extra file is included in this download. It is a text file named 'RLD_Readme.txt', and contains installation instructions, background information, campaign design notes, general play tips, and mission hints (warning: contains spoilers). Additionally, other hints are available by viewing the album of playtest screenshots in the Emperor Heaven gallery.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This campaign is rated 'Hard' and is designed for players of intermediate to advanced skill level. For the best play experience, a player should possess a good understanding of the game's combat and military operations, summoning and using the heroes (gods), monument construction, and empire-map diplomacy.

Missions Teasers: (Note - the first two missions have a time limit.)

Mission 1 - Raider of the Pearl River - 12 years, from 206 BCE to 194 BCE

Mission 2 - From Raider to Ruler - 12 years, from 194 BCE to 182 BCE

Mission 3 - Battle for a Kingdom - No time limit, starts in 182 BCE

I put a 5 stars note here to counterbalance the 4 star from Strategic indian, a little unfair for me.

Gweilo achieves his "looting" goal. The only bad thing for me was I had to many "The city bribes your army" instead of collect ennemy food or silk in M1 (like 70% of the time) I guess I had no luck.

The map is really nice, maybe a little bit big, all the left side was useless in my case. But a lot of space to build, a new access accross the river in M3. With a hardest map, I think the campaign would be raited Very hard.

In this case, Hard seems to be the good balance. Also the military sabotage is allowed !

Thank you for this new campaign and for bringing me back on this game !

frut_mut, thank you for the review! As a veteran campaign designer yourself, I am sure you saw the "experimental" nature of the design I tried here. I appreciate your clear eyes, and understanding.

I hope you will complete your remaining campaigns and share them with us!

Strategic Indian Hello gw
i get your point about the difficulty level, (I have seen your rationale behind it in other threads). I would wager there should be an "expert" level beyond advanced.

for example,
A Xia's Diary I M4-5, M7 and M9
A Xia's Diary II M9
A A Xia's Diary III M9

beautifully crafted with extreme difficulty and intricacy.

This particular is therefore "Advanced" as it is beyond the scope of what the base game gives us.

My review for M2 and M3....
sorry but there was no challenge left. I could pump out mighty armies as soon as i have 3 varieties of food and 1 silk.

Please please please
make tough campaigns. I check this form time to time and i was pleasantly surprised with the new campaign dropping although i will not replay this particular one. (not challenging enough)

In M3 I had to press ]]] and wait at 100% speed for things to happen. This needs the screws tightened on it mightly. Maybe build the great wall? along with another monument with more competent armies. I mean 3x 1 shield cities is not enough for me :)

great work! Keep it up!
Strategic Indian i read fruit muts comments.
i too got my 1st attack (1 inf+ 1 crossbow+ huang di) bribed.

I targeted military, although setting tribute = salt and attacking industry (might) work. I did not do it.

too trigger happy I guess.

Hunting tutorial question that fruit_mut had:
1 compact hunting connected to main granary was enough, and I did not have to Nu Wa them constantly.

The problem are the tigers so post 1 unit of crossbows or huang di on the eastern side where they stroll. I did not have problem maintaining 2 types of food until i could unlock 3 types and silk...rest is history :)

good luck

frut_mut Hello Strategic Indian !
I get your point here about level difficulty. As campaign creators, It's complicated for us to choose between making very hard campaign level (which I prefer to play personnally) and normal or hard campaign to satisfy others players..

Hello Strategic Indian (and frut_mut). Thank you both for your insightful comments and reviews of this campaign. TSI, I am quite flattered by your comments about those selected missions you mentioned from my "Xia Diaries" campaigns, as I have not had very much feedback about them over the years. I am so glad you enjoyed their challenge.

Now, please allow me to reminisce a bit here.

I started creating custom campaigns for this game in 2003, and over the last 20 years I have seen the interest in this game peak...then subside. I thought few players were left, except the die-hard veterans (as you two are). Nevertheless, in 2017, I met my friend Robbie on Facebook, and he invited me to share the administration of his Facebook page for ERoTMK. I soon learned that there are still new players discovering the magic and fun of playing this game. This discovery led me to examine the legacy of my contributions to the game, and I quickly noticed that my portfolio of custom campaigns was quite skewed towards campaigns of the "Very Hard" difficulty. These campaigns are rather intimidating to newer players. In the years since then, I have sought to balance it out with less difficult campaigns.

Will I ever design another custom campaign of "Very Hard" difficulty? The answer is probably YES, but I cannot say more until my Muse speaks to me.

Happy Gaming!
