The Grand City- An introduction to large city planning.
This campaign has been designed with the citybuilder in mind. You will take a journey into the past and slowly build a magnificent city. As time goes on, your fledgling city will evolve from small huts housing only a few hundred people, to a thriving ancient kingdom, housing hundreds of elite class citizens and thousands upon thousands of working class peasants.
Your journey will be long and tiresome. Each of the requests from your Emperor will require large workforces and vast amounts of resources. As you complete the mighty temples and palaces, your Emperor will become much more jubulent. Other cities that you could once call your allies may feel threatened by this growth. Keeping your heros happy as well as those who may oppose you, will become mandatory to your very survival.
As you start this mission, keep in mind that land will become scarce. Although your city may start out easily with acres and acres of virgin wilderness, as your city grows, space will become invaluable.
Build only enough farms to feed your population, and section off large areas of the map for both the elite class and monument building. Keep in mind that military might can persuade others to leave you alone. Utilize your heros and their special blessings to help your city prosper and for you to achieve your goals.
Although the storyline of this campaign may seem difficult, the mission was designed in a manner that will allow players of all skill levels to enjoy. Financially each episode starts off very rich. Should you encounter troubles from other cities it will be your choice whether to fight or bribe. Novice players should consider playing the campaign at normal settings, while those with higher skill levels should adjust the game to suit.
The city site will provide you with all of the resources needed to complete all of the campaign goals. However, opening trade will speed up the process.
Remember that this mission was meant as a learning mission and should not be considered as anything to extreme. Each of the episodes contain some rather large projects and the campaign will take several hours to complete.
I hope you all enjoy it.

Forgive a stupid comment, but why are we being forced to create a forums account (for forums I will most likely not visit very often, if at all) just to download files? I understand fully for submitting items, somewhat (which is the only reason I did it, for future use), but registering to download an adventure seems a little over the top to me. (Disclaimer: The preceding paragraph is no reflection against the campaign author; please do not think I'm blaming him, I'm just a little ticked off at 10 minutes spent trying to download.)
As for the campaign provided here: yummy, finally something new to play. And the fact that this site is up means it's time for me to get to work. ^_^ Perhaps I'll use the Review option after I get a chance to play it; gotta finish Sheng 2morrow (maybe...), then I can get to work.

Some pretty harsh comments and ratings for things.
Perfect harmony is obtainable, you dont need docks. Rating playability as a 2 for that? Very tough score on a campaign that mentions this is strictly for fun.
Knocking down buildings etc is needed if your city is not planned out well.
Story and instructions provided go into a fair bit of detail and do provide some nice reading.
Thanks for taking the time to play and review the campaign. I am sure that others will find this to be very enjoyable as well.

Took a little time to figure out but then the going got smooth

The monuments were pretty well selected
Map Design: 4
Nice map design
Story/Instructions: 5
Good storyline.
Additional Comments:
I enjoyed playing this campaign. The 800 people in Heavenly compound did pose a bit of a problem, but the end result was a pretty sight to behold. The last part was a bit of a let-down (36 months of heroes was automatic as Nu-Wa would land up and refuse to leave for a decent period). The last time I called Nu-Wa and Shen Nong.....They stayed put in the shrine, but the meter continued to tick). Thank you, BobT for a nicely designed, enjoyable campaign. |

A great campaign! I was disappointed when I'd finished all the ones that came with the game (plus the downloaded bonus one) so was happy to find this site.
This was a great game to just play and have fun with. All the resourses are available and there aren't too many disruptions...just fun (at least it was for me on the Normal setting). It was the type of campaign I'd wished I could play since buying the game (I'm not "into" all the military attacks, etc. and this game allowed me the funds to bribe my way out allowing me to just concentrate on city-building) so I have to say that this was my favourite mission of all...thanks for designing it. |

Very good at teaching a newer player on how to set up a city with large population requierments. Also a bit of fun for a skilled player who finds building large metropolises fun.
Balance: 3
Good balace of recorce management and city planning, but the monument and millitary aspects seemed put in just for something to do while building big. They should have been incorperated more into the planning of the city (the main aspect of the campaing)
Creativity: 2
Well, you can learn to build a big city. That's about it. Presented well though.
Map Design: 4
A big map is needed for a big city, and this map fits the bill. Good recorce placement. The map is desinged in with the main idea in mind, city planning.
Story/Instructions: 3
Story? What story. Ohh well, this is a kind of has instuctions inplace of a story, which is ok because they are good instructions.
Additional Comments: It's all about planning. Ohh yea, and about having fun!

Playability: 3
There is a good level of fun as you watch your city grow, and the monuments go up.
Balance: 3
There is an adequate challenge for all skill levels without it being too hard or too easy.
Creativity: 4
The integration of the map design, story line, resources, mission events, etc. is nicely done. It all models the designer's story line very well.
Map Design: 4
A great map. It's one of the most realistic-looking ones I've seen in this game. I would have rated it a '5' if it could have achieved perfect Feng Shui while allowing sea tradingposts.
Story/Instructions: 4
The story is well thought-out and is supported by the missions and - most importantly - by the events in the missions. The designer also supplies a text file in the download zip-file that has notes and instructions, which is always a bonus.
Additional Comments:
This is a quality campaign by a veteran designer. It lives up to the designer's comments on the download page; it's a good time for players of all skill levels.

Then why do you have waterbourne traders???
No mention of this in the Readme either - so, sorry but you deserve bad marks for this.
Edit: 19 Oct '03
It has been pointed out that my rating was perhaps unfair so I'll accept that and try to make amends.
Truth is, once I found it wasn't possible to trade with two of the trading partners I considered this city "broken" and gave up on it before I'd given it a chance. I still find this so frustrating that I can't bring myself to play it through, pity - as otherwise it sounds quite challenging and if it wasn't for this one problem I'd have no hesitation in marking it much higher.
Anyway, now I've calmed down I've marked it higher; Creativity and Storyline especially although for this 'trader-glitch' I can only manage 2 points each for Playability, Balance and Map Design.
Perhaps this city was meant to have no trade with two cities, perhaps we're only meant to deal with them on a Diplomatic/Military level .... I don't know - but I do feel that the ReadMe and the description should have made this clear.
Certainly if The Grand City V.2 were released I would be very tempted to give it another go.[Edited on 10/19/03 @ 03:55 PM]

Bobi, you make a legitimate point that I agree deserves a downgrade, but IMHO it's not fair to give a '1' rating in ALL categories. Maybe in a certain category, yes, but not in all of them. Your ratings are your own, but I humbly ask you to reconsider them (it's easy to edit your ratings, I did mine). Certainly there are other aspects of this campaign that deserve higher marks?
Edited (10/19/03): Bobi, thanks for your ratings revision.[Edited on 10/19/03 @ 04:24 PM]
